Biography
From Dirt Tracks to Asphalt Dreams: The Early Life of Hailie Deegan
Hailie Rochelle Deegan was born on July 18, 2001, in Temecula, California, into a family where speed wasn't a hobby — it was a way of life. Her father, Brian Deegan, is a motocross legend, founder of Metal Mulisha, and a multi-time X Games gold medalist. Racing wasn't something Hailie chose; it was something she was born into.
She began riding dirt bikes at age seven and received a Trophy Kart for her eighth birthday. By 2009, she had already won her first competitive race in the SXS Stadium Series Trophy Kart class. Through her early teens, she competed in the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series (LOORRS), where in 2013, she became the first female driver in the series' history to win a championship — claiming the Junior 2 Karts title. She followed that with the Modified Kart Regional Championship in 2015 and the Modified Kart National Championship in 2016, earning Lucas Oil Off Road Driver of the Year honors the same year.
In 2016, Deegan began her transition to asphalt racing through NASCAR's Drive for Diversity program, driving legend cars for Rev Racing. The following year, she was named to the prestigious NASCAR Next class — the youngest member and the only woman — while also joining Toyota's driver development program.
The NASCAR K&N Pro Series Breakthrough (2018–2019)
On January 3, 2018, Deegan was announced as a full-time driver for Bill McAnally Racing (BMR) in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West — a team that had won the series championship three consecutive years. She was the only female driver competing full-time in either K&N series that season.
What followed was a historic run. On September 29, 2018, at Meridian Speedway in Idaho, Deegan became the first woman to win a race at the NASCAR K&N Pro Series level. She also earned the series' first female pole position that same season at Las Vegas Motor Speedway's dirt track. She closed 2018 fifth in the standings and won Rookie of the Year honors.
In 2019, she added two more wins — again at Las Vegas and at Colorado National Speedway — finishing third in the K&N West standings. All three of her wins involved last-lap contact, cementing her reputation as an aggressive, fearless competitor. Kevin Harvick called her the K&N West driver with the "most potential," and NASCAR took notice.
Rising Through the Ranks: ARCA, Trucks, and Xfinity (2020–2024)
At the end of 2019, Deegan made a pivotal career move — switching from Toyota to Ford Performance's development program and signing with DGR-Crosley for full-time ARCA Menards Series competition. In 2020, she finished second at Daytona in her ARCA debut, claimed three more top-fives, and ended the season third in the standings while earning ARCA Rookie of the Year.
She made her NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series debut at Kansas in October 2020, posting the best debut result by a woman in series history. In 2021, racing the No. 1 Ford for David Gilliland Racing, she scored her first Truck Series top-10 at Gateway — the first by a woman outside a superspeedway — and was voted the series' Most Popular Driver, an honor she held for three consecutive years (2021–2023).
After four Truck Series seasons and a move to ThorSport Racing in 2023, Deegan stepped up to the NASCAR Xfinity Series in 2024 with AM Racing. Her best result was 12th at Talladega, but the team parted ways with her mid-season in July 2024 after a difficult campaign.
A Bold Detour: Chasing Open-Wheel Racing in Indy NXT (2025)
In October 2024, Deegan made a surprising and courageous career decision — signing with HMD Motorsports to compete in Indy NXT, the premier feeder series to IndyCar, for the 2025 season. She had briefly tested open-wheel machinery in the Formula Regional Americas Championship in late 2024 to prepare.
The 2025 season was a steep learning curve. Racing cars without power steering and at speeds significantly higher than stock cars, Deegan adapted progressively through the season. Her best results came at Laguna Seca's double-header, where she finished 12th and 11th. She ended the season 14th in the championship standings — a difficult debut, but one that demonstrated undeniable determination and a willingness to step far outside her comfort zone.
The Road Back: Returning to NASCAR in 2026
On January 21, 2026, Hailie Deegan announced a homecoming. She rejoined Bill McAnally Racing — the same team where she first made history — for a full 2026 ARCA Menards Series West campaign, piloting the No. 16 Chevrolet SS with support from NAPA Auto Care, Monster Energy, and Columbia Bank. She is also scheduled for part-time starts in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series with McAnally-Hilgemann Racing.
"I couldn't be more excited to reunite with Bill and the BMR team," Deegan said. "I've been away from stock cars for a bit but am focused on coming back stronger and competing for wins and a championship."
The 2026 season opened February 28 at Kern Raceway in Bakersfield, California. At 24 years old, Deegan is chasing her first series championship — returning to the series and the team where her legend was born. With a fiancé in Chase Cabre, sponsors behind her, and a hunger that has never dimmed, Hailie Deegan's story is far from finished.
